Winners of the LIS Placemaking Competition: Announcement!!

The Winner of the Competition – The Helix Landscape, Falkirk/Grangemouth, designed by Ironside Farrar. In accepting the Award of £1,000, presented by Linda Fabiani MSP, Julian Farrar paid tribute to the client, the teams of professionals who made it happen, and to the local communities who have taken the scheme to their Hearts.

Linda Fabiani said “This award illustrates the huge landscape challenges in brownfield and derelict land, and it shows how initiatives like this £25 million scheme can make new landscapes with iconic features such as the Kelpies sculptures”. Linda Fabiani is Convener of the Scottish Parliament’s Cross party Group on Architecture and the Built Environment.

The Student Winner of the Competition – Yuechen Hu for her site analysis and design for Redlees Country Park, Blantyre. Yuechen Hu was presented with the £250 award for her assessment of the derelict and unused site and its design potential to provide recreation opportunities for local people, as well as interpreting the history of the World War 2 gun battery, which lies at the centre.

Commended schemes were:

  • Polnoon Residential Streets, Eaglesham, East Renfrewshire, designed by Horner MacLennan
  • Bridgegate Public Realm, Irvine, Ayrshire, designed by Austin Smith Lord
  • Ben Lawers Visitor Plan, Perthshire, designed by Ian White Associates
  • Glasgow City Council

Winner of the Public ‘Popular Vote’ for the best scheme Lisa Mackenzie for An t-Eilean who will be presented with a £250 award.
