Ben Palmer (OPEN (Optimised Environments))

Ben studied landscape architecture at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in September 2000. Upon graduation from ECA, he joined the Edinburgh Lovejoy office, and became an original member of EDAW Edinburgh four years later when the office was acquired. Ben joined the team at OPEN in 2009, and is now a director at the practice.

Ben has significant experience in the design and delivery of major landscape projects, and was part of the original team that developed proposals for the RBS Headquarters at Gogarburn. Since being part of the original competition team in 2001, Ben has been involved at Quartermile, the redevelopment of Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary. This involvement continues, with OPEN delivering public realm and landscape associated with the remaining phases. Having developed a background in public realm, Ben worked on projects further afield in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, developing design codes and concept proposals for streets, spaces and entire districts. These projects developed a strategic approach to public realm, which is also demonstrated in a series of studies undertaken for City of Edinburgh Council. These included public realm strategies and urban design studies associated with the implementation of the new tram system.

Since joining OPEN Ben has been involved in several large scale public realm projects, including the creation of a major new public space in Derry – Londonderry and phases of the Belfast Streets Ahead programme of public realm improvements. Ben is currently leading the development of public realm proposals at Edinburgh St James, and has been involved in the V&A at Dundee project since the design competition in 2009. Working with Kengo Kuma and Associates and the rest of the design team, OPEN is currently overseeing the delivery of public realm and landscape on site.
